Net Metering Program is currently your best option for producing your own energy at a low cost. This program is open to any grid-connected customers who want to generate their own power while staying connected to the grid. It offers a great blend of independence and convenience.
How It Works
The Net Metering Program allows you to send your excess renewable electricity back to the utility grid, earning credits on your account. You can use these credits when your own system isn’t producing, and they can be carried forward for up to 12 months. This means you can use your own power during daylight hours and draw from your credits when your system isn’t generating electricity!
Residential systems of up to 10 kW are being installed across Ottawa and surrounding areas. Depending on your needs and available space for panels, you could potentially reduce your bill to just the base delivery fee, usually around $80 (varies by location). Plus, grid storage is more cost-effective and efficient than batteries, holding far more credit than typical off-grid battery banks.
For commercial customers, systems of up to 250 kW are also eligible under the Net Metering Program.
How to Apply
To find out if your home is eligible, start by calling Hydro Ottawa (613-738-6400) or Hydro One (1-877-447-4412) if you are outside of the city limits to get your feeder station and feeder number. Share this information with us at JTH Maintenance, and we’ll check the connection capacity for your household.
Once capacity is confirmed, we’ll assess your Hydro Bill, conduct a site visit, provide a quote, and schedule your installation—all with your approval!
Expected Costs
The cost for a system ranges from $4.50 to $3.50 per watt installed. For instance, a 10 kW system would be around $35,000 installed, while a 5 kW system would be approximately $22,000. Since each household’s needs vary, we recommend installing just enough to meet your requirements, which saves you money!
With the increasing popularity of solar energy, costs have significantly decreased over the last decade. On average, households can recoup their solar investment in under 13 years, while solar panels typically last about 25 years, leading to substantial savings.
Understanding Your Credits
Once your system is operational, your electricity needs will be met first. Any excess energy is sent back to the grid, creating a credit on your account based on your billing structure.
As of November 1, 2023, new Net Metered Customers now have more billing options! You can choose between Time of Use (TOU), Tiered, or, in some areas, Ultra Low Overnight (ULO) rates. This flexibility means you can select the best plan for your needs and switch without penalties.
The credits you generate last for 12 months before resetting, which is why we aim to optimize your system to match your usage.

Historical Energy Rates
Both Tiered Pricing and TOU rates have increased over the past ten years, generally rising about 9% per year. Given these trends and projected increases, now is a great time to reduce your bills!
